My husband and I met in 2000. I was on a High School Cheerleading squad, and he was on a college level Pro-Team (again, for cheerleading). We both had the same coach. We often worked out at the same gym, and often went to the same open gym (a night of open practice). Back then there was nothing between us, but years later we reacquainted, and well, now here we are!
Maybe someday I’ll write more about that, but really, the point is we were both Cheerleaders. As competitive cheerleaders we were often around gymnasts. We practiced tumbling skills, but needless to say, nothing quite like gymnasts throw!
These days my Husband & I are not too involved in the Cheerleading World, however we do enjoy Women’s Gymnastics. College, Elite, etc. It’s all very entertaining. In our local area, there are two main college gymnastics teams. California State University Fullerton (CSUF), and The University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). Recently, CSUF was informed if they could not raise enough money, their gymnastics program would be cut. With today’s economy, schools are on a limited budget, and if a program can’t bring in money, the University can’t afford to keep the program around.
UCLA head coach Valorie Kondos Field volenteered to help out CSUF coach Jill Hicks in putting together a program to help raise money. Today, both UCLA and CSUF came together for a “Southern California Preview” giving a glimpse of what both teams have to offer this year. Rather than competing against each other, they came together side by side (wearing the same outfits) and gave performances showing what this year has ahead. Tickets for the event were $10, and all proceeds went to help out CSUF gymnastics. In addition, Olympic Champion Nastia Liukin was in attendance. She answered questions, raffled off one of her leotards, and took pictures with fans (again for a price, after all, this was a fundraiser!).
It was a great event, and we all enjoyed the event. I certainly hope that CSUF is able to raise enough money to keep the program running long enough to endure the current economy.
If anybody would like to donate to CSUF gymnastics, click here. USA Gymnastics has already raised over $25,000, and will continue to take donations as long as they are needed.
