How do you respond to disaster?

by Jenn on January 16, 2010

My husband and I believe it’s important to always be prepared. We are known for having way too much stuff with us at any given moment. We buy things in bulk, and we do our best to purchase things we think we MAY need in the future. Case in point: Our Son needed to be transfered to a bed from his crib at just 8 months of age… and we already had a queen sized bed ready and waiting for him. I always find it a difficult balance to minimize and not have too much, yet to be prepared and have whatever it is I will, or may need in the future.

This year one of our families biggest resolutions is to get rid of extra stuff. Not stuff we need or may need, but junky useless stuff that just sits around and clutters our home. We are also trying to use less, and conserve more. All that being said, the recent Earthquake in Haiti just serves as a reminder that it’s good to always be prepared.

Do you have a supply of emergency water in your home? Canned or dried food? Bleach? Medical supplies? Cash? Something to defend yourself, and use to defend your belongings in a disaster? This list could go on and on, but I think you get my point.

In the midst of this disaster, perhaps it’s a good time for us to think of what we might need in a disaster, and to plan ahead.

Of course I write this from the second story of an old brick building in Los Angeles California that will fall down in any large earthquake, but still, it’s my challenge to you… think of what you and your family might need. It just may save your life.

I don’t know. The thing is when you start stockpiling, things only last so long. So how often do you re-stock, etc? Where do you put it all if you have a small place?

Unfortunately, I’m obligated to report to work in the case of something really big if my family is quite directly affected. We have an A and B emergency responder list.

We are actually fortunate enough to live in a rather large place. We actually have enough rooms that one has become a dedicated storage room. It looks kind of like a grocery store in there!

As for stockpiling, we actually work through our stuff. While I like to cook with fresh foods & veggies, I will go through our canned stuff before it needs to be replaced (and then we just replace it). Same with bottled water, etc. It takes some dedication to keep track of it & use (then replace) it, but so far it’s done us well.

What kind of work do you do to report to work an emergency? Thats quite some dedication! I’m not sure I’d be able to leave my family!

With this disaster in Haiti, it should serve as a reminder to those of us lucky enough to be unaffected that we must prepare just in case. Thank you for the reminder.
